Our Members

Fr. Bob comes with a wide pastoral experience, especially in working with youth (he is a former basketball coach). He also pursued graduate studies in Marian Theology and taught at the University of Dayton and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

Fr. Bob was a member of the Society of Mary, the Marianists, before receiving permission from Rome to transfer his vows to the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple. While a Marianist he received from the Holy Spirit an image of a religious community of men praising the Lord and being open to any gifts the Spirit wished to give. He worked with Fr. George to found that community.

With Fr. George and Fr Will, Fr. Bob oversees the formation of the members of the community. He is also the director of the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, TX. In this capacity he offers training and support to the prayer groups of the archdiocese. Fr. Bob recently wrote a book on the charismatic dimension of the Church, titled Celebrating a Charismatic Jubilee. He has been a sought after speaker at many charismatic conferences. He was pastor of St. Mary Magdalen for many years and is currently the pastor and administrator of two parishes, St. Philip of Jesus and St. Henry.

Fr. George is a member of the Society of Mary, the Marianists. He lives with the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple (BBD) to serve as their superior. Author of more than 30 books in the areas of biblical and pastoral theology and spirituality, he received his doctorate in Sacred Theology at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, he has been a speaker on six continents. He served as seminary rector in the U. S. and Canada and was director of novices for six years in Kathmandu, Nepal.

After becoming involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the early 1970s, Fr. George felt a call to help Catholics get more in touch with the Holy Spirit and his gifts. In 1995, with Fr. Bob Hogan, he began a new religious community in the Marianist family, the “Brothers of the Beloved Disciple.” Fr. George also teaches Scripture at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. With Father Marshall, he was given permission by his Marianist superiors to work with the new community. BBD combines devotion to Mary with an emphasis on the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Will Combs was born in 1969 and raised in New Jersey with his parents and two older sisters.  In 1988 at Bowdoin College, he realized that everything comes to an end and dies.  In search for someone who has risen from the dead, Will finally surrendered and begged Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of his life.  The Holy Spirit led him to a daily bread lifestyle of prayer and Scripture and eventually the Sacraments.  In Ecuador, he read The Acts of the Apostles for the first time and received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  As a recent convert of the Catholic Church, Will searched for a Catholic charismatic community to live in and serve.  God’s grace led him to the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple in 1996.  He has been serving with the BBD’s ever since, longing for the Church to fully live The Acts of the Apostles today.  For the past 18 years he has been serving as a priest at St. Mary Magdalen Church.  Fr. Will loves to sing, run, explore, and beat his Brothers in card games. 

Fr. Sean joined the community in 2010 after graduating from St. Mary’s University with a degree in Theology.  He took his final vows to God, a permanent commitment, in August 2017. He was ordained to the diaconate in November 2017, finished seminary in May 2018, and was ordained to the priesthood in June 2018. Fr. Sean is the current treasurer of the community as well as the vocation director. He is the Pastor at  St. Philip of Jesus Catholic Church.  Fr. Sean enjoys teaching the faith, forming disciples, and engaging in apologetics with non-Catholics.

Br. Rubén Garza has been with the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple since 2013. His role in the Community is exclusively of being a Brother. This state of life has brought him great peace and joy. Br. Rubén serves as the Community Steward. As Steward, he provides for all temporal needs of the Community as sacristan, cook, handyman, and such. Good St. Joseph is his model in carrying out such duties.
